De Havilland Mosquito – Part Five – Can I Make A Mess?

Or can I what?

Here are the in-progress shots of the Great Masking Adventure as it unfolded. Since it was entirely new ground, I cannot be sure whether I was doing it right. But the fact that nothing caught fire has to count as something good…

Here’s the overnight result – surprisingly successful, with only a few areas needing extension with freehand spraying. the divisions were pleasingly soft, without becoming mushy. In fact it emboldened me to try to mask the bottom as well…

The only reason these masks have worked is the regular shape of the mosquito fuselage and the easy pattern of wing and horizontal stabiliser. The next discovery was how matt that Tamiya Flat Black can be. When you brush it you frequently get a satin black.

Again success – only a few areas of overspray that yielded to some touch-up.

And in the end, the masking was fine. If I try it in future builds I will pay more attention to sealing at the leading and trailing edges. On to the gloss coat for decals and then we’ll see if the bow pen can cope with the Mozzie canopy.
