The Artillery

Occasionally I take a break from making 1:72 scale airplanes to make other models; houses, service stations, tanks, greasy spoon cafés… It is not so much a case of abandoning my theme as of refreshing the palate with a different taste. I return to the tarmac quickly enough.

One thing that my Air World needs is appropriate ground displays as well. I have several RAF and Canadian Army vehicles in 1:76 scale that would have been appropriate for the times. And now that my Little Workshop is up and running, the range of small plastic kit is also open to me. I would prefer them to be 1:72, of course, but do accept the manufacturer’s decisions to  mould them in 1:76.

This model is the first that I have had a chance to work on at the Scale Model Club referred to earlier – I set out to do the tractor one week and the gun the next. With a little painting time here at home, the kit went together really well there in the club rooms.

The scale is referred to as the ” Gentleman’s Scale ” for some reason…I do not know why…but I shall do my best to live up to the expectations of the name. Have to be careful not to get cement on the morning coat…

AIrfix have always done a nice small military vehicle, though my memory of them in the 60’s was clouded by the difficulty getting the tracks of the tanks to join together. They were made of a springy plastic that curved round all right, but then sprang apart just as easily. Presumably cyanoacrylates will make this better now.

And it is not 1960 any more. There are now more makers and presumably a wider range of vehicles available. As long as I need not step down to 1:87 scale ( HO ) all should be well.
