North American Mustang I – Part One – Genius Or Moron

I cannot decide which of the two I am…and you will kindly not write in and tell me, thank you. In this case the debate will rage around a new experiment I wish to make in painting. And I need a suitable subject to try it out on.

With most of my experiments and trials a few pieces of MDF board or card scraps work as the basic test pieces. They can succeed or fail and not cost a lot of money. They can be thrown away after the trial is over with no regret. Not so whan I wish to test a complete colour scheme. I cannot afford to throw model aircraft into the bin – I have too much invested in them, both financially and emotionally.

I still need economy in test subject, though and in this case what more economical than a Hobby Boss kit from a local shop? $ 13 and if it is a success it will be a star of the Air World museum. And I have located one that exactly fits within my RCAF criteria – A Hobby Boss version of the Mustang B or Mustang I in British service.

The kit is pure HB from the plastic tray to the hokey DF loop behind the canopy. It is armed to the teeth – though my version will be clean – and it looks as though the only serous mod I’ll need to do is form a plastic intake above the spinner in the centreline of he fuselage and hunt up a three-bladed prop. The kit version is a cuffed 4-blader but I reckon either my spare box or someone else’s will do the trick.

The scheme? Well, keep reading as I try my hand at an idea that has been brewing for months. In actual fact it depends upon skills that are 50 years old, but more of that later.
