North American Mustang I – Part Five – A Dappled Horse

Well, the Mustang is on charge and will be conveyed to RCAF Wet Dog in a day or so. It is as fresh as many coats of paint and varnish can make it – the decision to begin weathering the models has been postponed for a few months.

The final result of this experimental build is encouraging – the wax masks have not resulted in any marked troubles. I shall extend the practice to a larger and more expensive model in a few months. There’ll be a few modifications to make it more controllable but I’m happy with an old skill turned to new use.

I have made a mistake and learned from it – I shall not be trying to spray tiny trim panels where they can as easily be brush painted. Thus I may avoid damage to areas already painted. I also have a feeling that there may be jobs that could be better done – and safer done – with strips of suitable decal material.

The cognoscenti looking at the Mustang I images will recognise the places where I have skipped doing something – but they will also see where I have indeed added to the kit. Considering that it started as a P-51 Mustang B, the overall impression of the Mustang I is acceptable. Some time in the future I’ll revisit the kit and make it as a B under USAAF colours as I’ve found some desert aircraft that look great. In any event I consider that I have gotten good value yet again from Hobby Boss – the $ 13 was well spent.
