In Praise Of White Glue

The humble bottle of white glue is the most wonderful invention of all time for the model workshop. It has the ability to bond nearly anything – in some cases well and in some cases badly. It rarely sticks the operator to his bench or coffee cup and can be wiped off under the table with no fear of immobilizing a leg.

It is cheap – always a fine attribute for any model material – and it is safe. There are no fumes and if you get it on bare skin it just makes a gummy patch. It doesn’t mark paint or dissolve anything.

It dries clear – at least the best brands do. This means you can reinforce other joints that have been made in scale size and with a bit of luck the reinforcement will not show. The glue can also make clear windows in sizes too small to mould or cut out.

It is ideal for sticking canopies and windows in place. Drying slowly and clearly, it gives you time to straighten things and wipe away the excess.

It is also a perfect substitute for hair conditioner in squeeze bottles if you are coming up to April 1st. Use an old bottle, switch it back at the end of the day, and try not to give the game away by giggling as they scissor away their hair.

The best part about white glue is the fact that it can be loosened with water and badly applied parts can be peeled off and cleaned up. If you are going to make a blunder, do it with PVA glue.
