The New Direction Is Direction-finding

Idly surfing the net recently I noted that the RCAF station that I have taken as my inspiration was, for quite some time, a radar early warning facility as well as a training air base. This continued right through the period of time that my model layout depicts. I couldn’t resist the temptation to use some of the space on my display table to add a radar facility.

The Air World Museum has moved to a new location to make way for this and it has left enough space for the radar building, administration, a power house, and crew accommodation buildings. The project has started with the main radar dome and building – courtesy of a foam ball picked up in the local art-supply store. All the rest of the gear is right here in the workshop supply shelves, so this may prove to be an economical layout addition.

Fortunately there are a few internet pictures of the original site and even more of an abandoned radar building at Alsask, on the provincial border. It is 1960’s to 1980’s technology so the structure is pretty modern and slab-sided. I am not really confident that I can make a geodesic pattern on the dome but I can paint it matt white and make do.

At least in my own little world I will not have to put up with complaints from the locals that the radar is affecting the sheep…
