Sandown Park 2019 – Part Six – Before You Ask…

Back from my visit to the Victorian scale model exhibition, all my parcels have arrived, and I’ve reviewed the pictures taken on the day. Someone is bound to ask me which exhibit I thought best. After due consideration, here it is:

Olympic Doughnuts in Footscray.

A real model of a real place in real time. It was an icon of food caravans back in the day at Footscray Railway Station and was all you see here in the model. Plus an odour of sugar and grease. It’s closed now, due to the ill-health of the owner, but a new Dad and Dave’s Café has taken over the task of the jam doughnut supply in the suburb.

In a sea of camouflaged Messerschmitts and  gaudy Mecha monsters, this model is a haven of modest reality. I hope the maker finds more neglected subjects and renders them as well – this is art, not kit building.

First class.
