Boeing Fortress Mk III – Part Eight – The Reverse Of The Coin – A Belated Episode

***This post seems to have been left out of the saga of the Boeing Fortress Mk III. I guess the scheduling on the WordPress site is getting out of hand a little. Read it anyway – It’ll fill you in on what happened between No. 7 and No. 9. ***

I am never sure whether my ideas are the result of genius or idiocy. But I am buoyed by the thought that so far I do not drink my own bath water.

This time It involved looking at the colour call-out for the Fortress very carefully – and noting that the bulk of the plane is coal black – and that if I painted this portion first I would have to do far more masking for the rest of the camo job than if I left it for last.

I therefore decided to fence off the upper portion of the plane and pencil in the camouflage pattern to let me limit the amount of paint that was to be sprayed up there. Then I’d mask off the top and do the bottom later – a reverse of the normal procedure.

I was smart enough to put the engine cowlings on before I did this and to even get them on the correct engines.

As it was a sunny day, I then placed the ship in front of the spray booth and let fly with Tamiya Dark Earth spray paint from an AS can. The paint was excellent, the finish superb, and the fan pattern from the rattle can so wide as to obliterate all my careful lettering on the upper surfaces. So I just did the standard full brown and will mask it out for the dark green later.

Genius or idiot? I leave it up to you. Be kind.
