McDonnell Banshee – Part Two – The Body On The Rack

My new building rack was ready when I was working on the fuselage of the Banshee.

The heading image shows the bare thing taped down to the rack with cheap masking tape. Note that I have standardised upon the Bear brand painter’s tape from Bunnings for most non-critical tape jobs They do a very low-tack painters tape as well but it is so underpowered as to be liable to peel up half-way through a spray job on a hot day. The light green comes in two widths and you can use it for general holding as well as infill on wings.

I do not hesitate to reach for it when I run out of arms and fingers – holding fuselages in awkward positions, holding things straight for wing and tail attachment, etc. Combined with an adequate building plane surface you can put things in no-motion and then walk away as they set.

The rack has three sets of supports to cope with different tasks – here it lets the surprisingly large wing of the Banshee set after one side is glued.

And here it is with a different set to let the second wing set.

Good wing attachment points on Academy models.

The rack is adaptable to large bombers in all sorts of orientation as well as tiny ones. You can go right down to two divisions and wedge things in there.
