North American Sabre – Part Three – The Putty Worms Win Again

The debate about how to put on soft-edge British camouflage seems to have finally been decided – the J. Burrows Tuff Tac is the answer for most effects. The Sabre needs a simple day fighter scheme and in this case the contours are very smooth – no better time to trial the new technique.

There is another new technique in use – the underside of the wings and tail plane are outlined in Ustar or Tamiya tape before the bulk of the surface is filled in with cheap Scotch masking tape. This seals the leading and trailing edges and gives a much better colour demarcation.

On the top, the putty camo mask is still done in green tape but it finishes a little short of the actual pattern. The white putty worms make up the difference and then are sealed in with some rubber paint-on mask. I don’t like the Mr. Neo masking fluid so it can be used up to do this gloopy task. It is surprisingly quick to do if you do not have to follow a desperately detailed plan.

Time to go off tomorrow to Officeworks and raid their supplies of Burrows white Tuff Tac.
