Avia S-199 – Part Five – ” Daddy, Why Is that Man Swearing? “

” He’s an aircraft modeller, Dear, and something has gone wrong. ”

The something started out going right. I managed to print out a sheet of Magen David emblems on the epson on strips of masking tape. I then transferred the tape to a cutting board and carefully made the roundels and the stars as separate masks.

Then I applied them to the model, with some Al foil as extra masking against overspray.

Simple task and the subsequent spraying of the white went perfectly. Mr Color Character White.

The ball of wax started to unravel when I tried to put the star masks over the white. I thought that I had them centred but when the blue spraying had been completed and dried I peeled off the masking to discover that the insignia were noticeably cross-eyed. You have to be dead on and not dead off.

Fortunately the underside insignia were acceptable and I had enough decals to do the other 4. I deliberately did not try to scrub off the painted ones as I knew it would disrupt the surface and the rest of the wings and fuselage – and thank goodness the decal insignia were just that little bit larger in diameter than the paint jobs.

They seem to have settled pretty well, so the episode of panic could settle down. Score one for experience.
