RCAF Lancaster – Part Seven – Hannants

This RCAF CX 104 Lancaster is the first time I have used the Xtradecals form the British firm of Hannants. I’ve often seen them advertised but hitherto the prices of the sets has always been somewhat of a barrier to their use – by the time we get them here they can be the same price as a kit. But in this case they are so special that the expense can be justified. The cost of the kit was 3 X that of the aftermarket markings. I cannot say whether i will ever build enough more Lancasters to use up the other two options in the set, but I may meet someone who wishes to and we can effect a swap.

The set contains the 1950’s version of the RCAF rescue Lancaster and that meant red wing and tail panels instead of orange ones. The side flash is thin blue rather than broad red and white. There are oddities. But overall it is a beautiful set.

Unfortunately the side flash broke up when I tried to apply it. Too thin by far. So I compromised with a bow pen and marked down the side demarcation line and left it at that.

The fluorescent orange and blue band was terrifying to apply – but it dropped on and fitted round perfectly – as did the lettering that had to overlie it. The roundels are ever so slightly translucent, but not to a worrisome degree. And they slid on perfectly. Once it was all looking good I set up the tails with a jig and glued them on overnight. It may seem like overkill with solvent cement  but I was taking no chances.

Mock-up.
