A Short Aside…

$ 5.00. Pink and purple. Her Madge on one side and Parliament House on the other. A bird and some wattles.

Simple thought, isn’t it. I’ve no ideas what $ 5.00 Australian would buy in Great Britain or North America. It would probably buy nothing at all in Europe or the Arabian sinkholes…but here in Oz it buys a pot of Tamiya or Mr. Color paint. Possibly it buys squirt bottles of Vallejo or AK or whoever is the paint maker of choice for the month. For non-model-makers the question is irrelevant, but we are model-makers so it means something to us. It means we can make our car or ship or plane look good.

If we went to a pub…when there were pubs…we could have spent it on half pint of boutique beer. We could still go to the local bottle shop and get a couple of cans of Mistake Lager. We’d regret it, but frugally.

If we went to Hungry Mack’s or WFC? or any of the other grease dispensaries at the edge of shopping centres, we could have gotten a meal fit for a king. Possibly Martin Luther King…

If we went to the news agency we could have bought Lotto tickets that would have been worthless. But more nutritious in the end than the stuff from the fast-food outlets.

But we went to the hobby shop and brought home a new bottle of Pearlescent Intestine or RLM 4775-90-28800, or whatever the label said. And cut it with levelling thinner and added three drops of the last foolish decision – and sprayed it and had a wonderful time. No-one else in our list of consumers will feel good about their decision in three month’s time. Nor would we, if the forums and the contest judges had anything to say about it…

But isn’t that a glorious paint job. Eh? Eh?

We’ve had value for money.
