Fokker F-27 Friendship – Part Three – The Prime Example

You may be a little surprised to see me priming the F-27 fuselage separately from the wings. The reason is that the wings will not be cemented on until the very last moment – they are a different colour than the fuselage and their absence will make the fuselage painting so much easier. I’ll be masking extensively and need all the help I can get.

The length of the aircraft is somewhat of a problem for the Little Workshop. I like to get undisturbed access around a plane as I spray so that the coats can be put on seamlessly. In this case I have been left with only one alternative to hold it – the front well – and it makes the plane too long for the booth….hence the cantilever arm and precarious position. You move round carefully when you are doing this.

In actual fact I put on a plastic glove and held the fuselage by the nose as I sprayed from the tail forward, only hanging it up when I got forward of the wing root. It was not as dicey as I pretended. And the Mr Color Base White 1000 should be a good foundation for the white/red/silver of the final coats. I judged  ( correctly ) that the fine surface finish of the model did not need Mr. Surfacer 1000 and it meant I would not be trying to spray white topcoat to cover grey.
