Sopwith Camel – Part One – A Kind Gift

A gift camel. I feel like a middle eastern potentate.

Actually a second gift Camel. One came from my friend Paul and one from my friend Warren. This latter one is the Academy kit, and as I’ve just completed a Revell WW1 fighter, I thought I would have a change and do the Academy. It may be an older Marusan moulding long evolved through numerous companies.

It’s a small kit, in a small box, and only comprises two small sprue trees. There is no glasswork, The instructions are basic and the deal sheet flawed, but the potential is there to make quite a nice basic representation of this fighter.

The flawed decals – see the tailplane section and compare it to the box art… are easily circumvented. Paint the tail white and paint the fin flash red and blue with the airbrush. A task of minutes.

The interplanes and cabanes look pretty simple in this one – the channel and connection method is used to tie them together.

There are a few ejector circles but again this is a job of minutes to fill.

No pilot, seat moulded in. May see what the spares box offers but honestly, you’ll not see much.

And as for the scheme – well these decals seem to have been derived from a flyer in a private collection, but I rather fancy the Hendon example hanging from their roof trusses – it has the same basic markings. I’ll use the roundels and the side lettering and search for an airframe number.
