I built an Airfix Beaufighter model a year or so ago – the modern kit – and was extremely pleased with the result. It was completed as an RCAF model with a famous pilot in it. This Beau is a very much older version of the plane from Airfix. Scalemates tells me it is a 1976 rebox of a late 50’s kit. I believe, it, but am not put off in the slightest by the age of the mould.

Raised lines and rivets, of course, and a crude torpedo. Little cockpit but a fine set of aviators included. Basic engine detail only. It could not attract the price of the newer Airfix product, but then I didn’t pay that figure – it’s a stash build from a former clubmate.

It will not stay as an RAF aircraft either, nor did the prototype that I have fixed upon. Home-made decals are coming and an entirely different paint scheme will eventually appear. But the aircraft does have a place in history, and it will feature well in my desert air museum.

I’m glad the nationality will change – those old decals are actually terrible, and were so the day they were boxed.
