Triumph Herald – Part Two – Sending You To Coventry

In this case after the Luftwaffe have long gone.

The Triumph Herald is coming along smartly, courtesy of a Covid isolation period. I am in no fear – this is what stashes are for, and like many wise modellers I keep a material and paint stash as well. The weather is cold but as far as model making, I’m hot!

The underpan and chassis are joined in this model to allow for later exposure of the engine and tilting bonnet. I am pleased with the level of detail, though Like most car models, it will never be turned over for inspection.

The swaying cross member hides a transverse leaf spring with a couple of very thin sway bars. The curved pieces under the axle are presumably continuations of load support from the main frame aft past the wheels. With no space on this tiny British/Italian design for a frame member above the axle, I guess they decided to bolt it on under the thing. At least it will bottom out on the crown of an outback road before the diff does…

The front suspension is more sophisticated, with top and bottom arms. The actual mechanics of the Airfix model are suspect, but a dirty paint job under there will hide the improbabilities. And if Airfix do not want to provide a tie rod, I will not remain discreetly silent.

The actual fit is decent, given the age of the thing and the price. I should not like to see it in hard Eastern European plastic or resin parts, however. It may end up being jollier than you think.
