Soviet ZIS-5 Part Six – Igor’s Flying Inn

This truck and the accompanying accessories are to be known as Igor’s Flying Inn – named after GK Chesterton’s novel and my friend in Ukraine.

It was not hard to find 12 crates of vodka to load onto the truck. Or the table and chairs. Or the wooden box full of cheese and sausages. The MiniArt firm from Ukraine has kits for just these accessories – proving that they have a firm grasp of the correct priorities of life. The week spent labelling the bottles and constructing their crates was memorable.

My admiration for Hobby Boss has been enhanced, as everything I could have reasonably expected to fit on this kit fell into place. There was a worrisome moment with the SMS paint on the cab and box – it rather wrinkled up the undercoat. I over-coated with gloss yellow from Mr. Color and recovered the situation – more experiment with undercoats and spraying is needed before the SMS is entirely cleared for use.

The bonnet is not functional – it will be open from now one – but the engine is finely detailed and I am not ashamed to have people see it.

A final word of gratitude to friend John who purchased this kit for me in Singapore – it has been a delight to build.
