Fairey Swordfish Mk I – Part Four _ THM

It may seem foolish to bypass much of the effort that Airfix went to when they designed this model.

But that is what I did when I started researching the Canadian connection for this aircraft. It would appear that there were a number of them in RCAF and RCN service during and after WW2. And a number have survived as museum pieces throughout Canada. There is even one flying, though it may have gone back to a collection in the UK.

Never mind – THM does exist in a Canadian hangar and has a real history – though the displayed aircraft may have more to do with a post-war owner than with military service. I suspect it is as much a kit of parts as the Airfix one…

There are clear pictures of it out in the open being towed along a tarmac, as well as within the museum itself. The scheme is simple, and fortunately someone got up onto a walkway to take to shot of the upper surface of the wing – a view often missed in museums. You’d not know whether there was a roundel up there from any of the other tourist shots.

Note that if I ever find an after-market kit of the closed Swordfish canopy – I’ll build this one again in RCN service.
