Chinese Flying Animal – Part One – The Dollar Army

I need to find a Chinese airplane enthusiast who can tell me whether the Polikarpov I-16 in Nationalist Chinese service in the 1930’s and 40’s carried an animal’s name.

When the Soviets used them they were the Ishak – mule. When the Spanish Nationalists flew them they were the Rata – rat. And the Spanish Republicans knew them as the Mosca – fly. As they served in 5 separate wars under 6 different air forces, they can certainly be classified as a well-used commodity.

I have built a type 24 before as a Soviet plane – this new kit is a type 28 and the externals look to be quite the same. It will be dedicated to the Chinese Nationalist air force in their standard colours.

The construction of this Ukrainian kit is superb, with a very detailed engine compartment. The Soviet one is closed – this one will have the side panels of the cowling removed and to show the workings. I need to locate some suitable vehicle to carry the panels in the diorama.

At least I will be spared the ICM decals – always a nervous artistic venture.
