North Of The River

Comes south of the river…once a year.

I live south of the water…in fact of several waters…and find myself going north at least once a week to participate with the Scale Model Club of Western Australia. We’ve got a wonderful set of club rooms set in a northern recreation park, and every convenience to hand. Every one except the facility of distance – my weekly modelling journey is in the worst of the morning rush hour and sometimes amounts to an hour or more.

It’s worth it for the companionship, but you have ti remind yourself of that as you idle at yet another set of lights…

Never mind – this year SMCWA put up a splendid table again, with a number of big and new models. I cannot vouch for the combat history of the Pink Panther, but the C-47 is obviously a D-Day plane. There are number of other tanks as well, seeing that these days they are being used in increasing numbers.

There are also special enthusiasts in SMCWA, and I mean that literally. One of our members concentrates upon rail-borne models, whether they are locomotives, carriages, freight wagons, or rail guns. Many are of such a size that they can have crews and vignettes built around them. I think he has chosen wisely as he can build the vehicles without having to slave over a massive layout or worry about wiring or radio control.

And as far as specialism goes…the weathered models of Duncanson Motors are famous in Western Australia. Bill is the only man who goes to a new car dealership with an angle grinder and a bucket of acid, and they are all terrified of him…
