Vickers Viscount – Part Four – Smooth Success

My internet enquiries have failed to turn up a list of names given to the Vickers Viscount aircraft flown by Trans Canada Airlines and then by Air Canada – just a corporate change.

However they were titled, they seem to have been quite a success on the Northern American routes – passengers noting the smooth ride provided by the turboprops vs piston engines.

While this little box-scale Kader kit from Hong Kong reminds me very much of the plastic toys of the 1950’s, it does have some pretty solid construction inside and the decision to block the windows was a sensible one. The fit was as good as the major makers of the time.

The best use of this kit is straight out of he box as an airline promotion model – something that would have been on the counter of a TCA or AC office in the 50’s-70’s. I elected to decal the windows instead of painting them to see how difficult a task it might prove. In the end, Quite do-able in an hour or so, and the black gloss works well. I did print a set of white/blue windows as well but they looked a bit anaemic in the paint scheme.

It will also feature in a Facebook group dedicated to the photography of toys and scale models so have a search for it there.

Balance sheet of the Vickers Viscount in the Canadian airlines system was apparently quite favourable. In my case I seem to have produced this one in a week for 20¢ per day.
