RWD 5bis – Part Two – The Solo Monoplane

Whenever you see the word ” monoplane ” you know you are looking at a period design.

Because there were other choices – biplanes, triplanes, sesquiplanes, etc. These still exist today, but only in oddity or X-plane form.

The big feature of this little airplane is the fuel tank – sandwiched into the tiny interior in the position that the second seat would normally occupy. The real machine also had additional tanks in the wings.

The kit is straight and plumb for the most part, and the seams scraped down in minutes. The assembly order was abridged when I put the wing on before the windows, but a kind fate let the clear panels slide in without any fuss. I have had more trouble with British models.

The clear panels were covered with the new liquid mask I mixed up from everything that was left over on the workbench. It really is easy to push it into position with a cocktail stick and – spoiler alert – it did the job perfectly. This is the way of the future for me.

As the entire aircraft was to be French Silver Grey to represent doped fabric, I could attach everything before undercoating. Note that I have learned my lesson about the silver finishes and now approach them with more science.
