Tupolev SB 2 – Part Four – Taipei

It is unfashionable nowadays to think of air raids from mainland China on Taiwan. But there was a time when it was a good idea…

As when the Soviet Volunteer group that operated these bombers for the Nationalist Chinese Government essayed to fly to Taipei and bomb newly-arrived Japanese aircraft at the airfield before they could be thrown into battle.

It worked – Soviet aviators from Hankou hit the field, burned up 40 aircraft and year’s worth of fuel then made it back to their base. Elsewhere, their TB 3’s and DB 3’s never had such a success – but that won’t stop these from being modelled anyway…

The camouflage on the SB 2 is a new technique – a basic coat of light blue over-sprayed with two shades of green through masks. The masks were old PE frets that have been saved from previous build. I could not be more pleased.

The MG armament is withdrawn for this model but is there within the front and dorsal perspex housings.

What a bit of good luck – to encounter this fine model because of the failure of another kit.
