Perth’s Plastic People

Sunday morning at the big local scale model exhibition was a festival of wanderers – some with purpose and some with purses. I know…I was one of them.

We do not dress well – in some cases because of poverty of purse…in others an equal lack of taste. No matter, we have paid to get in. In the case of the ones seen with kits and tools under their arms, they have paid to get out of it too. The young lady from Crewe was absolutely right.

Oh, the expressions on our faces! Awe and desire on the faces of some of the kids – envy and despair on those of the adults. The entrants into the competitions preserved carefully neutral expressions…there’s no point snarling at the judges or each other. It’s funny how often they circled round their own entry again and again.

Yes, it was still there.

And no-one attacked the other models with a meat hammer. There may be an unwritten code of conduct that prevents this. Or perhaps it just hasn’t been written into the contest rules yet. Must attend to that…

Readers who think this has strayed past the streetlights should google up the North American Soap Box Derby scandal with the electromagnet in the car. It all went downhill…
