VVS Tupolev SB2 – Part Three – Freehand

Not a choice I frequently make – I am a mask and spray person.

In this case the photos of an SB2 in the Winter War were pretty thin on the ground ( and that was covered in snow,…) and the delineation of the two areas of colour in the monochrome pictures is poor.

Not helped by the ” colourisation boys ” who Photoshop their opinions into life. They are good, and I admire retouching as much as the next studio portraitist, but it still leaves me wondering.

In the end I took a drawing as base for my freehanding of the white over the blue. I realise this is no more logical than the photo approach, but the ergonomics of winter camouflage in the field could hardly support careful schemes. And I was relieved to find that the more propagandistic markings were left off. Possibly because they might mean that the Finns would get a faster snap shot at the Soviets.
