You start to wonder about the viability of the place.
This may certainly be the case when you go at an odd time of the day – say they open 24/7 and it is 3:00 AM. But if it’s noon on Tuesday, you have to wonder at empty aisles.
Prices can do it. Inflation and uncertain times can keep the buyers home. Stale stock can also thin the herd. The last few years saw a decline in goods actually available. And on-line alternatives mean that people can stay home and waste their money as readily as they can at a regular store.
The remedy? Well, sales and bargains are a good start, but a better one is adequate advertising. I went to a model railway exhibition and took note that a hobby shop I used to visit had a stand there. As that was the big annual event, good sense would have advised them to do so…but I had seen others miss out on annual events in other hobbies.
You cannot hide your light under a bushel for ever.
