Toying With A Model

And not the artist’s model in the garret, either. We’ve all seen the ” Carry On ” movies. We know what goes on…

I mean the scale model – or the scale toy. I realise this will rile readers – this coupling of two genres – but riled readers are the stock in trade of the weblog, and few people ever throw their computers in the fire in disgust. Most just fire back snerty comments.

As a child I had toys – lucky me. They were companions when no-one else my age was about, and I loved them. I was kind to my possessions, and would have many of them now if it had not been for repeatedly moving house, province, or continent. Some of them would be quite valuable as sales items now – some mere trash.

Later, I had scale models – built by myself with what I hoped was an increasing degree of skill. They did not survive the removes either, but I have occasionally encountered them in swap sales or as re-boxes by retro manufacturers. Sometimes I treat myself to a purchased memory.

In the fuzzy middle ground were – and are – the die cast items. The toys that are not toys and the models that you do not make. I shall discuss them in the next post.
