Leave Us Not

Leave us not get the impression that The Little World is only airplanes – it is far more, as the ever-growing storage racks at my studio will attest. There are cars, trains, planes, houses, shops, caravans, and dinosaurs. Also stage sets, movie studios, horses, porcelain dogs, and a resident gecko that lays eggs.

The heading image is one shop in a row of buildings on 4th Street SW in Calgary, Alberta. In 1966. At 4:30 in the afternoon on a summer day. With the wind from the southeast. And the smell of the bins from the Dairy Queen wafting over the sidewalk.

Hey, you live in your Little World, and I’ll live in mine.

And it is perfect illustration that modelling activities can be anything – they need not be constrained by commercial offering or the categories of clubs and societies. If you want to make a model of a German coal stove of the 1840’s, that is exactly what you are entitled to do. As yet, the only restrictions on modellers come from the councils who don’t want you to fly your R/C aircraft or run your R/C boats on their territory, but then the local councils don’t want to do put your McDonald’s box into the wrong rubbish bin…and if you are going to live your life categorizing trash, you really should not be reading this column.

You might put it into the wrong bin.
