How Many?

I live in Perth, Western Australia – the furthest west that you can get before the world resets and it becomes east again. We’re where the wagon train either stops or gets extremely wet..

Our town has sheds, workshops, hobby rooms, garages, and minor factories all over the place – nearly every back yard has some structure in it and a surprisingly large number of those buildings house human industry and business. There seems to be more engineering in Perth backyards than in the industrial complexes.

Which leads me to speculate on how many Little Worlds there might be right now in our metro area. Model villages, dolls house suburbs, train layouts, model airfields, airplane factories, shipyards, etc etc. How many gaming workshops, car tracks, model garages…

Scores? Certainly. Hundreds? Likely. Thousands? Possibly.

And what wonders are there that are never seen at exhibition – dedicated Little Worlds that the owners are too shy to show. Some modellers are reclusive and never seem to thrive in contact with others. Some are the life and soul of clubs. I’ll bet there are museum-quality Little Worlds out there that we’d all die to see…if only their builders had the courage and opportunity to show them before they disappear.

How do we raise that courage?
