Grumman Avenger – Part Seven – A Calm And Serene Day

The last day of a model build is either going to be Shangri-la or Stalingrad. Either you are merely dusting it with a feather or grinding the tailplanes off with a chainsaw. In the case of the Avenger it was all peaceful.

Well, peaceful after I glued the fake .50 into the turret.

I am starting to view turrets with loathing and suspicion. So far the Airfix ones have been decent, provided it is a new mould. Old kits are rather horrible in their clear parts – a fact I never appreciated as a kid. Perhaps my standards have risen as my eyesight has declined, but I appreciate any additional work the makers can put into the framing and glazing.

The actual greenhouse was rather nice, with defined frames and clear plastic. Unfortunately it’s a bit bare in there, but the alternative – $ 45 worth of photo etch – was never contemplated.

All in all, I am very satisfied with the smaller of my birthday kits.  Now I must see if they do a Dauntless and a Helldiver.

Note: I shall haunt the plastic shows and hobby shops for a packet of airscrew decals – this is very bare.
