The Model Car Spectacular could have been exclusive. They might have barred the door to anyone who did not know the secret password or who could not provide proof that they have been accepted by a standards committee. They could have…and I have read of other modelling societies that behave very much like this. But then the Model Car Spectacular is heir to 20 year’s success of the Model Car Sunday and much too egalitarian and good humoured to ever go down that path.
Thank goodness. The organisation of the displays seems to have been done seamlessly and long lines of people passing scrutineers…as in WASMex or the Melbourne model show…did not occur. Oh, you queued to pay your $ 5 entry fee and get your entrant’s badge, but that was just a door entry. There was space enough for everyone inside.
There was also a cheerful sense of modeller’s spirit, as a section of one table was set aside for ” modeller’s other interests “. Ie, planes and ships. Just a small representation but enough to show that the organisers were a welcoming lot and wanted everyone to have a good time.
I think this is marvellous – and I earnestly hope that this sort of wide-ranging spirit will increase. We’ve see a big model train exhibition once a year – and a big plastic scale exhibition. Several exhibition cum sales days for the die cast collectors and a pretty massive dollhouse show as well. And wouldn’t it be fabulous if the committees and clubs and singletons and everyone went in for a combined show at the major convention centre or show ground. Everyone all in and the whole spectrum of modelling and gaming for the public to feast on. And not just a day – make it 3 or 4 days with sales and swap meets and contest events.
Anyway, here’s the planes:

These last ones are really tiny – I think they are 1:144 scale. Attractive, though.
