And the humidity dropped and the sun came out. Shows you that sacrificing virgins really works, eh?*
Having secured the Mandate Of Heaven…or at least the mandate of the Meteorological Department, I mixed up 50% Supercheap clear acrylic lacquer and 50% Mr. Color Levelling Thinner and started spraying. The mixing was done in a large glass jar so that there is extra lacquer if needed.
The spraying was methodical – two P-40’s first, then 2 P-39’s, then the Marauder, the Havoc, and the Mitchell in succession. I made ” S ” hooks for the last two bombers and hung them up to cure above the shop heater – the rest went into the warm box. They have set to the touch and will be cured for the next 20 hours before I do anything more to them – so at the modelling club it will be a flurry of decal application.
The big experiment later in the week will be the use of Testors Dullcote over a paint and decal mule. I’m using up the plastic parts from the failed Chinese Grumman as test pieces. I know Dullcote has a good reputation, but then so did Eugene McCarthy and look where that went. I require proof in the hand that it will do what it says over the decals I intend to apply.
The ideal millionaire’s model workshop would be 100% air conditioned and humidity-controlled all year round. No impediment to painting or finishing would ever arise. Small cherubs would flutter from the ceiling and clean the airbrush. Yeah…right…As it is I do what I can with whatever weather the bureau sends me. At least now that I have an indoor table set up I can cut and glue in comfort.
* Not an original virgin. Just a cover virgin…
