The Classification List For Scale Models

A recent comment regarding the 5-foot rule for judging scale models has prompted me to ponder on a possible classification list. No names, no pack drill – but I konw where a lot of mine sit on the scale.

  1. International museum-quality model – paid for by a government and regarded as a national treasure.
  2. Published scratch-built model with its own monograph.
  3. International contest winner.
  4. National contest winner.
  5. State contest winner.
  6. Local contest winner.
  7. Club display model.
  8. Home display model in cabinet.
  9. Home display model on desk or shelf.
  10. Workshop model.
  11. Three-foot-rule model.
  12. Five-foot-rule model.
  13. Twenty five-foot-rule model.
  14. Toy shop model.
  15. Curio shop model.
  16. Pop-up Indo shop model.
  17. Pop-up book model.
  18. Cereal packet prize model.
  19. Cereal packet box cutout model.

The odd thing about humans is we can be equally proud of each one of these – even if we have had little to do with the making of it. They are our scale children and can do no wrong.

Note: Twenty five-foot-rule children are more common that you might think.
