When to reach for your can. Or your brush. Or your soul.
What’s the best decision you can make about the way you are going to paint a model? How do you arrive at it? What are the factors that influence that decision?
Let’s start out with the basics – what are you trying to achieve in painting your model? A durable coating that will prevent rust?

If so, you’ve failed, Bill…
Or are you trying to make a close scale resemblance to a real vehicle or scene?

Well, done, unknown modeller.
Are you seeking perfection in the surface finish?

Or was it gnarly and manky to begin with?

Analyse what you want at the end of your build – whether it will be a fresh thing or a foul one. Don’t be afraid to let your own preferences take precedence here. Unless you are building to a contract – and a signed one at that – you need please only yourself. If you find yourself choosing your modelling pathway to please others, at least find out exactly what it is that they want. No sense prostituting yourself if no-one is going to buy you – the underwear is a killer to get off…
Okay – You know what it is you are aiming for – fresh, foul, new, old, shiny, scruffy,…whatever. Write it down. Now how to get there?
Read on, MacDuff…
Note: if you change your mind half-way be prepared for 2 x the work and 1/2 the satisfaction.
