De Havilland DH.100 Vampire FB.6 – Part One – Those Riotous Swiss

Congratulaions – you have coped with one vampire. now you can cope with another…

One thing – you have to hand it to the Swiss. They’re a barrel of laughs. All you have to do is sell them a old jet fighter and they’re out with the paint pots making a carnival float out of it. It’s the same in their banks and milk chocolate factories. All you hear all day long is slapping and giggling.

This pig-nose vampire was purchased under a wrong impression. I thought that they featured in the Middle East, but turns out that they are a ” Pinocchio ” version used by the Swiss Flugwaffe. They featured as regular fighters in the 1960’s and by the time the striped pyjama version came along they were just about out of service. These last garish planes were used to train anti-aircraft gunners – hence the colours. I’m still trying to figure out the box drawing with the tiny rockets under the wings – best guess is target markers of some sort, as they do not seem big enough for ground attack on anything larger than a Fiat 500.

Nevetheless, I’m determined to paint the stripes. And I want very much to compare this the the Amodel version that was finished in Canadian colours. Already I can see the superior moulding and fit of the Special Hobby kit….plus a superb instruction sheet and colour call-out.
