The Shelf Life

I have a miniature air museum of model airplanes. And a motor museum of model cars. And an air field. And an airport. And very little space to actually live in – I need to move a Tupolev sideways to sit on the toilet. Reform is needed.

I thought that this was possible with IKEA. I purchased Billy bookshelves and glass doors, gave away a lot of books, and put the models on the shelves…until the shelves overflowed. Now I have had another brilliant idea to make it all better. Remember that Victor Frankenstein had ideas too…

I have decided to divide the models up into approprate displays: VVS Uzshitmi Air Show, RAF COLDE WELLCOME, CORRIGAN AFB, Schmattarim Museum, and CFB GLEET BAY as a start. These venues will host the ever-growing fleet of 1:72 model aircraft dedicated to their various air forces. I am both nervous and thrilled about the Brazilian Museum located at Amigo de Onća but I am going to samba to conceal my feelings.

To make these displays possible I have looked at the IKEA shelves and decided to re-arrange them to give even spacing. IKEA is fun in that way – you can re-configure it whenever you have a change of heart or mind. I will make display trays that look like the hardstands of the appropriate air force bases and stick the models to them. Then they can be slid in and out of the cabinet for exhibitions. I hope this bastard China virus will abate so that we get to do this sort of thing in the future without misery or fear.

Note: This in no way supplants the Air World Museum boxes or hangars or the WET DOG fields. The number of planes is just growing exponentially.
