” So tell me, Boss, why is I here? In the stash. In my little bag with my decal sheet and dodgy instructions. Why am I not back in the hobby shop with all the other kits? Why did I get chosen? ”
a. You were the only kit of the essential model I need for my collection, never mind that you are moulded from cheese and cost two week’s wages and have no locating pins. It was either you or a vac-form kit from 1973. And my crazy only goes so far.
b. Your box art was so stirring that I could not resist. I was riveted to the picture and could not resist taking it to the counter and pulling out the credit card. Yellow skies and rocket flashes will do that to a modeller…
c. You were so cheap that I could not resist you. I love cheap things – sausages, women, and reject beer from South America. And cheap kits from eastern Europe. You are all much of a muchness and to your credit, you do not give me indigestion or sores.
d. You are the last of a long line. Of course that means that you are the final admission from the factory that they cannot make a decent product, but the nostalgia to be had from owning you will make it all worthwhile. I’ve already watched a YouTube of your factory being blown down with dynamite to make way for a sewage farm, so the cycle of life is complete. I’ll never build you, you can be sure of that.
e. You remind me of my youth, and unlike the death notices of all the pinup girls I lusted after then, you do not depress me. I’ll take that back – I’ve seen your decal sheet…
f. It was my birthday and I had gift vouchers to use up. I would normally have not bothered with you, but you just fitted into using up the last of the credit. Surprisingly, you will be all the more fun to build because of this.
g. There was a sale on and I cannot resist a sale.
h. I see potential in you that your designers and moulders never intended. I have a Google picture of your prototype that no-one else has ever cared to build and with the aid of a hot knife and a bucket of putty you will be made to resemble it. Hold still…
i. A friend gave you to me and I will build you whatever happens.
