15 = 50

If someone owes you $ 50 and tries to pay you off with $ 15, don’t you let them get away with it. That’s robbery.

But if you find that you can have the same amount of fun, nourishment, or drunken-ness for $ 15 as you can for $ 50…take advantage of the discount.

I have come to this conclusion while building a cheap model airplane kit. $ 14.95 and out the door. And so far it has occupied the same amount of time and yielded the same pleasure in construction as the $ 50 kits.

The end result will not be as precise, nor as detailed as the more expensive product. The kit will not have the prestige of the more expensive manufacturer’s name. The decals will be more fragile and the instructions infinitely worse, but I am a big boy and can take care with the markings and the information. If the worst eventuates, I can make new decals and research the subject via other means.

But the building time will be the same and the pleasure got from cutting, sanding, fitting, and problem solving will be the same. The coats of paint will be the same. The pride at the end will be the same or more – considering the harder road chosen.

And the end result at 30% of the cost will make it all the sweeter.

The next time someone brags about how much their super-model costs, remember the joys of frugal modelling.
