Potez 540 – part Six – Acqui De Espero!

I think that lost something in the translation… Or maybe it was a famous battle cry. Or a caption on a poster. Whatever…it translates as a bare ” here I wait “. Honest – it googles up as an advertising phrase for a hotel in the Canary Islands…

Don’t ask why it appears on the side of a Republican bomber.

The Potez is a delightful kit – let down only by the frangible nature of the decals. If I had elected to paint the tail as I did the wings it would have been perfect. As it is, this is an airplane that can be described as ” stately “. Of course you have to remember that Bangladesh and Haiti are states and make your judgement accordingly. It is unlikely that this airplane could achieve much in the way of stealth attack – even before the days of radar you probably would have been able to hear it coming by the wind whistling through the rigging.

Even in a era of Handley Page Heyfords and Cant seaplanes, this is a contraption. I look forward to finding a French stablemate like the Amiot 143 bomber to match it. With luck an old Heller kit or a Czech re-mould will surface locally. I would also jump at an airline or mail plane version to build.

One thing about the construction of strut-supported aircraft. You are never quite done with them – just when you thought you had connected the last tinkertoy part another one shows up on the plan. It may well have been like that in the factory. Little men may have scuttled around the workshop riveting things together when no-one was looking. If they were not exactly straight, just attach another one to brace the first two…
