WHERE will tell us the location of zen:

A person can seek tranquillity through meditation anywhere – the experts can do it in a Tokyo subway train in rush hour with the same success rate that they would have on a mountain in the mist. Newcomers need the mountain and the simple robes to remind them not to think. “

WHO is the recruiting officer for the Zen brigade. WHO decides who gets to be tranquil and who doesn’t:

” Nearly anyone can practice zen if they wish to. No-one can order them to nor deny it them. As it is an internal thing, anyone who can master their thoughts can practice it. “

Okay, we can be a bit more specific about the location of scale modelling. the traditional places; kitchen table, desktop, workbench, or tea tray in front of telly are all good, with specific advantages and drawbacks for each location. If you can’t do it in one place, find another. This might be tough for people who live in one-tatami apartments or ship’s bunks but even here some modelling can be accomplished.

Too much space is hard to define, but I’ve seen people who have concentrated upon the environment for modelling rather than the activity itself and ended up achieving a magnificent workshop and no models. Try for a balance – enough space to do the messy and smelly things but a nice enough environment to make it visually rewarding . The SMCWA clubrooms are getting to be an ideal combination of facilities and display. Add a spray room and a video display system and it should be just about perfect.

As for who should, or could, or does model we can safely say anyone. Anyone who wants to have part of the little world under their control should start to build it – even if it is just one model. They can project their thoughts and desires into it at far cheaper a price than any full-size venture, and gain the same benefit.
