And not only black bottomed, but black based as well.
I decided that I would be thorough with the Boston. Black basing for the upper structure – though the under surface would be night black and would cancel out any basing. And AK Air real colours for the upper. They spray so well.
The black basing is fun once you get over the initial horror of marking up a perfectly-undercoated plane. You get about halfway through a tailplane and either chicken out or push doggedly through to the end. It is actually rewarding, but you’re on tenterhooks right up to the last spray.
Phil Flory says it is a mistake to do under white. Some suggest that you can use a grey line spray rather than black, but this remains to be seen. At least if you stuff it up you can fog over it with the colour. Actually, you can remove the whole mess and go again if you’re keen. I’ve done that before, but not with pride.

That black bottom isn’t coal black or matt black either – it’s Mr Color’s No. 125 cowling colour and it looks great.
