Piper J3 – Part Three – Yellow; Mellow Or Perilous?

The heading image is not yellow – it’s a combination of Mr. Surfacer white and some old Mr. Color flat white. The bottles are low and a combination of forces was needed. The end result is fine – and is absolutely essential for any yellow painting. I discovered this long ago while painting an Avro Anson with Humbrol enamel – trying to get yellow to cover over grey is nearly impossible.

It is the same for some oranges and reds – you need to go unrealistically thick with the paint to hide the undercoat and the detail of a 1:72 model goes out the window. So white it is..

The yellow on the components – done because there is decaling to do under struts – is getting there but still not a clear solid colour. It needed two more thing coats after this. At least lacquer dries fast in a warm workshop.

The yellow is RCAF Trainer yellow, specially mixed.
