The Big Local Model Show Competition

I was talking to a friend recently and he suggested we try a joint entry into one of the competitions at the big local model show – the one to be held at the Cannington Exhibition Centre next April. There is to be a class of contest that allows multiple builders within one entry.

This is new, and will be a great boon to people who may need assistance with their hobby. There are barriers to success enough with scale modelling ( says the man picking superglue fragments out of his chest hair…) and it’s nice to think friends can help each other overcome them.

Of course there are some concerns with a joint entry. The contest judges are hardly going to be handing out their prize medals on yellow ribbons in handfulls, so a winning multiple-builder model will still get just the one. Which means that the partners are going to have to either take it in turns to wear the yellow ribbon or both wear it at the same time and move around like Siamese twins in a three-legged race. Even this would be good if the other person was a curvy blonde…but in the modelling circles they are rare.

One thing I am going to have to improve is the manner of my public outreach in front of the stand. I note that most stands have a table out the front and chairs behind it. There is a tendency after a few hours just to retreat to the chair and hide behind a cheese sandwich. One’s hobby bonhomie develops a slow leak and goes flat. I must make the effort, as apparently they do on the European continent, to meet and greet visitors and engage them. If I do go flat I can engage them with a Bofors gun…
