Hawker Demon – Part Two – That Sinking Feeling

Bovril would have prevented this…

Actually the problem is ejector post marks in the wings of the Demon. They are as marked as any I’ve ever seen, but fortunately Airfix configured the mould to place them on the underside of the wings and tailplane.

Equally fortunatly I have an unused tube of Mr. Hobby white putty that needs trying out. It is laquer-based, of course, and seems to be quite fluid as it squeezes from the tube. Not as runny as the Vallejo acrylic tube with the long applicator nose. It is readily applied with a spatula into the holes and forms a skin quickly – and can then be tamped more firmly.

However, it is a slow setter – I left it overnight before I was confident in cleaning it up. I must say, however, that once set it files and sands superbly. Crisp and smooth, with no crumbling. The real challenge will be to devise a pressure applicator tube system that can deliver it into seams and cracks in tiny amounts like the Vallejo product. We had these things in 1960’s dentistry and it may be possible to find their modern equivalent – though I hope I don’t have to pay Dental Houses or Henry Schein prices for it. Time to scrounge amongst my retiring colleagues…

The end result is fine for the purpose. The fuselage halves do fit and contain a laudable amount of detail.
