Remember: It’s Only A Hobby

If you’re smart.

If you make it your job you have no hobby. Then you have to take up digging ditches to let off steam after building scale models all day…

And so it goes. There are people who love their work and bosses who love that dedication…because they can make more money out of the driving than the driven. If a man is prepared to buy and wield the whip that lashes him into faster work, why – you let him. Time is money and a wise employer can steal both.

If that employee has a hobby, he has a bastion to which he may repair when the pressure of work becomes intolerable. He may have the habit of keep reminding himself of it while the bosses are grinding him down. It is very frustrating for a commander to see the commanded showing streaks of happiness.

When this sort of thing becomes a nuisance, the wise employer devises a way in which it can be turned to profit. If the worker grows their own vegetables and brings them for lunch, they can be rousted from the break room halfway through a bite to run errands. If they know how to do something vaguely job-related they can be forced to do it on overtime.

But no-one can force you to build scale models – either their way or for their profit. You do it on your own clock.
