Gosh, I remember my mother saying that when I was a kid. Takes ya back, eh…
The tool wall you see in the heading image was the result of going to Bunnings and looking at the prices they wanted for Tactix tool boxes and storage containers. These are not the most expensive items, but like IKEA goods, they are never exactly what you want. You find yourself adjusting your plans to match what the big shops can get cheap from China.
Well, I can get things cheap from China, too. And it don’t get much cheaper than free.
I need a tool wall to store the stuff I use when I’m inside the house, modelling in wet or scorching weather. I’ve got the bench and the air conditioner and the sound system and the beer fridge…I just need some way to organise the tools that’s better than rattling them around in a shoe box.
Hence my raid on the store of Chinese take-away food containers. We live in an area that has a large Asian population and a large number of good Chinese, Thai, Singaporean, Malaysian, and Indian restaurants. They all do take-away, and the containers are decent quality. ( the food is, too…)
I save them and use them for all sorts of sorting. In this case they are big enough and strong enough to cope with modelling tools and supplies.
The back board is a simple sheet of foam board that I had in stock. The containers are hot-glued onto it and secured with cable ties ( I was given the cable ties as well…) It sits on the site secured by one strip of Gaffer tape.
And the cost – as such – was $ 0.00. I admire Bunnings, but not enough to pay for their affections.
