Yak 3 – Part Four _ Speed Is As Speed Does

When you are not bending up connecting rods from brass PE sheets for a 1/72 kit, it seems to go a lot faster in the construction.

Not as liable to win Best-of-Show at the Anorak Expo, but you have to be realistic. And Hobby Boss are the most realistic moulders I know.

The Yak 3 is finished in 4 days – it would have made it in 3 had the weather been a little kinder. It will be perfect for the library diorama and has also been the basis for a workshop discovery; I can use cheap generic thinners for model work.

The kit is straight OOTB with no modification. The only deviation from the instructions is the self-mixed grey/green colour used in the camouflage. I mistrusted the call-out and had enough paint remnants to make what I thought was a better hue.

The other advantage with as quick a kit as this is that it doesn’t deplete one’s interest before completion. I googled the story of the fighter plane and ran down a number of authentic reports of it from Soviet pilots who flew it. Also noted the advantages and drawbacks with it. It is a real thing in my mind now, as opposed to just an exotic kit.
