Canadair CT-116 – Part One – Turkey Shoot

Stopping at Perth Hobby Centre for a brief browse, I passed by the airplane kit rack and noticed this PM model of a Northrop T-38 Talon wedged in between several other Turkish oddities.

I’ve built several of the PM models kits before and noted that they were value for money, but technically very low down on the scale of precision. Apparntly they are reboots of defunct moulds done as a quick consumer item. In this case I suspect the original mould was from Canada’s Mastercraft. Not greatly detailed as the original and not greatly improved by time or relocation.

However, it is the only game in town. The Italeri model of the Northrop f-5 can be had in various liveries, and is very attractive as such. But you’d need to do a deal of wrangling to get a CT-116 out of it. And I am prepared to put up with less-than-stellar models if they can only fill a gap.

The box opening was at another chap’s workshop, so there are no standard views of he contents. Suffice it to say that I got a fuselage that would fit somewhat reasonably, wings that would not, and tailplanes with no detail whatsoever. If your hobby is rescribing kits you need look no further than this one. Thankfully, it has a more polished surface than the previous PM mouldings, though the plastic is no better.

The instructions are probably better than the original Mastercraft, and the decal sheet actually looks rather decent. It’s USAF and Turkey but at least supplies some stencil and warning signs that can be used in the RCAF version.

That’s not an attempt to dodge Northrop’s lawyers – it’s a typo.
