Henschel Hs 123A-1 – Part One – 15th Squadron

Well here we go again with the Airfix Classics. And this one is destined to be quite different from what Airfix envisaged.

The plane is intriguing – one of the last of the serving biplanes…or this might even be considered a sesquiplane. It is deceptively fighter-like but in actuality is a dive bomber. When the original kit came out in 1970 it was a baggie, but quickly advanced to the boxed lineup. An interesting choice of subjects for Airfix, as they did few Spanish Civil War planes. I can’t recall any Republican models from them.

Three cheers for this Vintage Classic, as it is a cheap way for me to add a new plane type to a new air force collection. The kit has held up well over the time – the sprue trees are reasonably clean and the struts will not need too much de-burring.

The decal sheet is up to the latest standards, so I suspect it has been re-drawn digitally. A pity my choice of build is neither of the box schemes, but I will get to use some tiny common markings.

The instruction sheet is an interesting combination of classic diagram with modern colour call-out. I suspect with Airfix Vintage Classic that we would not need the assembly diagram to get it together.

I can feel the mojo rising…
